Day 2

Monday - 15 Jun, 2026

Exploring Pompeii, Sipping Wine, and Scaling Vesuvius

Today we go back in history and discover how volcanism influenced Greek mythology which in turn influenced the foundation of the Roman empire itself right here! You will discover the vast archaeological site of Pompeii. Once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city, Pompeii was buried under meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The preserved site features excavated ruins of streets and houses that you will explore. Driving only a few kilometers from the archaeological site of Pompeii we will stop for a fantastic wine tasting experience accompanied by traditional local products, at Cantina del Vesuvio located in the open countryside on the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius. Situated in the village of Trecase, the winery is an ideal stopping point between a visit to Pompeii and a climb to the crater of Mt. Vesuvius. In the afternoon, we will climb the volcano. Mount Vesuvius is one of only two active volcanos in Continental Europe and stands about 1281 meters tall, with a symmetrical central cone and steep wooden slopes. Overnight in Sorrento

The isle of Capri and the Luminous Blue Grotto

Today we travel to the fascinating island of Capri. An island renowned for its rugged landscape, boutiques, ranging from designer clothing to limoncello and handmade leather sandals. One of its most famous natural sites, which we will take time to visit, is the Blue Grotto, a dark cavern where the sea glows an electric blue, the result of sunlight streaming through an underwater cavern. Day 4

Wednesday - 17 Jun, 2026

Castel del Monte and Bari's Medieval Charms

After breakfast we leave for a drive across the boot of Italy to reach Matera From the ancient city to the rural farmlands complete with a cooking course After another fantastic breakfast, we will enjoy a walking tour of Matera highlighting its ancient foundations, its medieval architecture and artwork, and more. Most of its architecture is based around Byzantine, Normans and the Aragonese periods but what is most indicative of the town are the Sassi, or cave dwellings, that were made a UNESCO world heritage site in 1993. This town is like no other in Italy! We will take a break from sightseeing and discover Matera’s rural heart with a private cooking class at a traditional farm. You will meet a local family on their organic olive and orange farm, hone your cooking skills and prepare traditional starters and pastas... and finally enjoy a country lunch to taste the dishes you have prepared together. Thursday - 18 Jun, 2026

Basilicata to Bay of Naples: Ancient Wonders and Aeolian Sea Voyage

Today after breakfast we will have a little more time to explore Matera, before moving to nearby Venosa. Venosa was a major city along the Roman Appian Way and birthplace of the famous poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus. We, however, will visit the amazing ruins of the Abbey of Santissima Trinita where many of the first Normans, including William Iron arm and Robert Guiscard were buried. It is from this small unassuming city of Venosa that Norman power radiated out across the Mediterranean world in the 11th century. Then we will head to the area where the excellent Campania Buffalo mozzarella is produced, recognized by the European community with the prestigious DOP mark. This is a fresh cheese of the highest quality, famous all over the world for its unique flavor and for being the irreplaceable ingredient of the Pizza Margherita. After lunch, will visit Paestum, ancient city of the Magna Graecia, and discover its famous Archaeological Park. Here you can see some of the most beautiful and well-preserved temples of the Greek era, from the temple of Athena to those of Neptune and Hera, built in perfect Doric order. At the centre of the site, you can admire the Roman Forum with foundations of public and private buildings. There is also a small Roman amphitheatre of which only the southern half is visible. Later in the afternoon we head back to Naples and its port to board our ferry ship for an overnight trip to Palermo. More than just a place to catch a rest, sailing the seas at night under the twinkling stars is an event unto itself. For those night owls, you will see lava and occasional volcanic explosions in the distance as we sail past the Aeolian islands. Overnight in a sleeper cabin with private bathroom.

Day 6

Friday - 19 Jun, 2026

Palermo Unveiled: Medieval and Baroque Splendor, local delicacies, and Hidden Treasures

Welcome to Palermo! As we disembark from our ferry, we will be met by our private transportation who will take us for a traditional breakfast at the Antica Caffe’ Spinnato. Exploding in taste from everything from Cornetti to Cannoli, your first impression of Palermo will be wonderful. Our transportation will take our luggage to our nearby hotel. After breakfast we will explore the historical center of Palermo. This was the polyglot capital city of the Normans, and we will discover art, architecture, and cuisine with traces of Arab, Norman, French, and Spanish rule everywhere around us. Some highlights of this amazing and unforgettable morning will include the Royal Palace of the Norman rulers, the Cathedral of Palermo where Roger II and Frederick II lie in repose, the Arabesque Zisa castle, as well as the local bizarre or marketplace of the city that has been part of local life for more than 1,200 years. Continue your visit with the most famous ancient bazar food “La Vucciria”. Visiting the open-air street markets of Palermo should be mandatory for any visitor. This street market that boasts produce and delicacies from all over Sicily has been operating for more than a 1000 years. The rest of the afternoon is free to explore on your own as there is a lot to enjoy in this eclectic city. Overnight in Palermo

Day 7

Saturday - 20 Jun, 2026

Coastal Sicily from the Castle of Caccamo to the enchanting seaside village of Cefalu

Today after a Sicilian breakfast that inevitably includes the Blood Orange (red orange juice), we head East to first visit the Norman Castle of Caccamo. This is one of the largest and best-preserved castles of medieval Italy and is perched on a cliff more than 1,600 feet above the sea. Stupendous and awe-inspiring, this castle must be visited in person to appreciate just how beautiful yet powerful it is. Next, we head to Cefalu, which was founded by the Sicilian people before becoming a Greek village. We will, however, visit the wonderous Norman Cathedral of Cefalu that was built on the orders of King Roger II. This cathedral is an UNESCO world heritage site for its combination of Arab and Norman art and architecture. Located near the seashore, the elegance of the cathedral is matched by the beauty of the Sicilian landscape itself. After lunch, you will have free time to explore the local boutique shops, sample local delicacies, wines, and gaze upon the Turquoise seas. Day 8

Sunday - 21 Jun, 2026

Taormina and pizza making class

Start the day with a beautiful sunrise view over the Ionian Sea. The sanctuary is built into the rock wall and offers a stunning backdrop. Then, you will explore the Teatro Antico di Taormina, an ancient Greek theater dating back to the 3rd century BCE. It's one of the best-preserved theaters in Sicily. Stroll Through Corso Umberto: Wander through the charming medieval streets of Taormina, lined with shops, cafes, and Baroque churches. We will visit the Villa Communale, relax in this beautiful public garden with stunning views of Mount Etna and the sea. After a free lunch, we will return to Palermo for a relaxing afternoon, before heading later to our pizza-making course. You will acquire not only the technical and manual skills needed to prepare pizza, but also a thorough knowledge of the ingredients. Knowing how to recognize quality raw materials is, after all, the first step to preparing an exceptional pizza or focaccia sfincione. You will prepare the dough with your own hands, and you will later use it to roll out a classic pizza. At the end of the cooking course, you will finally be able to enjoy the fruit of your labor... Day 9

Monday - 22 Jun, 2026

Erice & Marsala Salt, Olive Oil, and Wine

Today after another delicious breakfast, we depart for Erice. Along the way we will see one of Sicily’s most beautiful coastlines near Castellammare del Golfo with its famous turquoise waters before making an ascent up the side of a mountain to reach Erice itself. We will be amazed at the Cyclopean walls that the Phoenicians left when they were engaged in a struggle for primacy against Rome 2,200 years ago. But we will also enjoy seeing two castles here, the first being the Pepoli Castle, constructed by the Arabs. The second is the Venus Castle which was constructed by the Normans. The Norman castle was constructed on top of a temple of Venus and thus its name, but Greek mythology holds that the founder of the temple was originally Aeneas who was a Trojan fleeing Troy after its fall to the Greeks. Mythology, History, and amazing views across the Mediterranean make this a very special visit. Enjoy a light lunch in a local Sicilian Olive Oil producer Farmhouse including tasting of mixed local products. This afternoon, we drive along the scenic Salt Way Road to admire the beautiful Saltpans where the sea-salt is still produced following the old Phoenician tradition preserved during the century. We then continue onto Marsala, the Arab “Marsa Allah” –Harbor of God–, is known in the whole world for one thing: Wine! The Marsala Wine comes from the western lands of Sicily and its name derives from the homonymous town. The Marsala is the oldest Italian wine, with an average alcohol content of about 18 degrees. DAY 10

Tuesday - 23 Jun, 2026

Sicily from the movies to its mountain Cathedral of Monreale

This morning, we will have a unique experience based on Mafia-themed. This is a fun alternative to get to know the main sites of Palermo's historic center. Palermo is the city in Sicily where the Cosa Nostra was born and its surroundings were chosen as locations to film some scenes of The Godfather. You can visit Piazza Giuseppe Verdi, which is the epicenter of the capital, Mercado del Capo, where Italian gangsterism was born, as well as Piazza della Memoria. You can also learn about the links between politics and the mafia in Sicily and the influence of the Cosa Nostra on the resistance and separatist movements during World War II and the post-war period. After a unique tour, we will have some free time for lunch before heading up to see and experience the amazing Monreale cathedral. Evening: We will enjoy a farewell supper, Sicilian style. We came, we saw, and we conquered Southern Italy and Sicily together! Well, at least we can say we ate our way across the old Norman kingdom.

Wednesday - 24 Jun, 2026

Arrivederci!

Good morning and after one final breakfast, we whisk you off to the airport for your flight home. We hope you were amazed by this special program that was created only for those who have a passion for medieval Italian history and culture and who dare to go off the beaten path to discover the real Italy.
